Obituary

James Douglas Boyd
March 9, 1941 – July 21, 2020

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad, Doug Boyd, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, after a brief hard-fought battle with cancer. Doug is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Audrey, daughter Carrie, sons Greg (Brenda) and Don (Anita) and grandchildren Craig (Lauren) Kyle, Megan, Erin and Evan, and numerous other family members and friends. Doug was predeceased by his brother Donnie in 1948, and parents Bob and Helen Boyd.

Doug was born and raised in Chilliwack B.C., and after marrying Audrey in 1961, moved to the Queen Charlotte Islands to work in the logging and fishing industries. In 1965 he and Audrey moved the family to Squamish, where Doug and his business partner Ian, started their own falling company, and in later years, The Garden Centre.

Doug was a long time member of The Squamish Valley Golf Club, and one of the many volunteers that contributed to the development of the course on the banks of the Mamquam River. As a businessman and member of the Squamish Rotary Club, Doug volunteered his time for many local causes, sponsoring sports teams and supporting The Boy Scout Xmas Tree drive from The Garden Centre for over 20 years.

Along with Doug’s love of gardening, spending time with family, endless jokes and story telling; he and Audrey loved to travel, returning often to Kihei, Maui to vacation with family and friends.

After retiring in 2012, Doug could be found having coffee several days per week with the guys (you know who you are) solving the world’s problems or puttering in his beautiful garden.

We will miss his love, generosity, quick wit and sense of humour, that have left us with many happy memories.

The family wishes to Thank Drs. Cudmore and Parkin, the entire Oncology staff of The Squamish General Hospital, and the Drs. and staff of the Palliative Care Team for their care and compassion for our Dad.

As requested, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, Doug can best be remembered by donations to The Squamish Hospital Foundation; The Squamish Hospice Society or a charity of your choice.

Dear Audrey & family
My sincere condolences to all of you. I have such fond memories of Doug growing up as neighbours on Clark Drive in Chilliwack. May all the wonderful memories you have be of comfort to you during this very difficult time.

We are so sorry to hear about Doug's passing, in fact we were just thinking of him and Audrey a couple of weeks ago. I had the pleasure of knowing Doug for many years while he owned ‘The Garden Centre’ in Squamish. Doug always made you laugh with his stories, in fact you were usually laughing even before he was finished since Doug had a hard time telling them as he was usually laughing so hard himself. I remember a road trip with 5 or 6 of us going to the US to look at Christmas trees when Doug started telling a joke, it took him about 20 minutes to tell most of it because he was laughing so hard and by the end of it he forgot the punch line!, I don’t thing any of us had laughed so hard for years at this. Doug was a great person to know, be around and to do business with. I know he will be surely missed by Audrey and family and I know he was so proud of his children and spoke about them often.
Our hearts are with you at this time.

Audrey and Family.
I was shocked to read in the local paper about the death of Doug. I am sending you my condolences and sincerely hope that all the good times will help and comfort you in this difficult time. I am one of the former buyers at United Flower Growers Coop and had the pleasure for all those years to sit one seat over from Doug. If my memory serves me correct than I also did some buying for Doug when he was away. One of the sons came to the auction to pick it up. Doug will be remembered for his stories. If he decided to share the story with you , it usually happened that he was killing himself laughing already three quarters into the story and you had to ask him if he could repeat the last part because you did not hear the end as he was laughing so much. He also introduced to some new auction lingo that still lives on to this date. He also felt quite strong that people should have to take an IQ test before they were allowed to buy. Oh man I should have shorted the Peso , that is a line from the early eighties! I will plant some trees or shrubs in the yard, because I am a floral man. I wish you and the family all the best.
